  252. With the loss of the bottom 2.150mhz of the 220 band (remember the 150khz
  253. was given over to weak signal thus costing 6 more repeater channels to be
  254. lost), the 220SMA has instituted the policy of requiring all repeater
  255. owners to re-register their systems every three years. Systems that do
  256. not exist or do not submit the required paperwork will be decoordinated
  257. and purged from the files. Should a frequency appear unused, they will
  258. not recognize any system which is not coordinated and will not deal with
  259. the operator of an uncoordinated system that moves onto that frequency
  260. pair until they vacate the pair. If you find an abandaned freq, you can
  261. submit a request for coordination requesting the pair; however, if there
  262. is another group ahead of you in the request line and they are in the
  263. same coverage area, then you more than likely will not get the freq.
  264.  
  265. In other words, don't put up a repeater and then tell them that you have
  266. done so. They already have proof that the FCC will side with the 
  267. coordinating body over a single renegade user. (I can't state exactly
  268. what the proof is other than that we were sited examples at the last
  269. 220SMA meeting.)

  301. Be aware that the usage of this system very structured and that any variance
  302. from the "offical" method often results in a lecture from an 
  303. Annally Retentive Regulation Loving Kilocycle Cop.
  304. IE: 3-10 minute time limit, Use the system to contact already known persons,
  305. that is, no turning on the system to make a new friend in a distant town.
  306.  
  307. Also, most network nodes are kept in the "off" mode. A code control cheat
  308. sheet is neccessary to enable the network for a QSO, and then disable the 
  309. network afterward.

  355. car, which has a company radio in it, too.  Only a few times has he
  356. grabbed the wrong microphone, and neither the amateurs or the Highway
  357. Patrol dispatchers have complained. :-)  He tends to pop out and tease
  358. amateurs that brag about their speed, though....

  398. My wife and I have an ancient Midland 13-513 220 MHz radio that we use for a
  399. base station.  It doesn't have a built-in PL encoder, one of the previous
  400. owners stuck on an aftermarket encoder.  A couple of weeks ago it started
  401. flaking out on us.  It will appear to be working--in fact it apparently is
  402. still able to receive the radar signals that the Navy so generously sprinkles
  403. around San Diego--but does not transmit or receive, at least not in the band
  404. it's supposed to be in.  The problem has now gone from intermittent to a solid
  405. failure.  I want to try to fix it, but to do so I need a schematic.  Would
  406. anyone out there by chance have a schematic for this or a similar radio?  Or
  407. even, has anyone out there ever *seen* one of these radios--it was given to my
  408. wife by a friend, we don't know who the original owner was, but it looks like
  409. about mid-70's vintage.

  461. I knew the Defender of Radio Lawbreakers would eventually surface. You
  462. came to Bly's defense in December when he bragged about operating
  463. without a license, and now in June Bly resurfaces and so do you.

  465. I will continue to publicly condemn those who intentionally break the law;
  466. if you choose to hid your head or deride me then you, in effect, are indirectly
  467. condoning their behavior. I'm very secure and very happy but I won't let
  468. that stop me from condemning someone who does wrong. I'm sure that 
  469. you scold your children when then do wrong; does that make you an `insecure,
  470. unhappy' person?

  473. Now, concerning HF CW, to the uninitiated, DX pileups might sound as if 
  474. everyone is jamming one another but there is a sense of order in all
  475. those hetrodyne squeals. Music to my ears!

  477. A CW station jamming a SSB net? Is it possible the net started right on
  478. top of a CW QSO? You would had to have been parked on that freq prior 
  479. to the start of the net to conclusively call it jamming. It's possible
  480. that the two CW stations were trying to continue their QSO under the 
  481. SSB net (maybe it was even a CW net that was there first).

  520. Well Greg, at least It wasn't made up.  If it seemed to be insulting,
  521. it was not intended to be.

  523. So far I have received two pieces of email and three postings about it.
  524. The response from the folks affiliated with W6UE has been cordial and
  525. constructive.  This was undoubtedly a case of one operator who was tired
  526. and just wanted us to go away at that moment.  There are good reasons
  527. why they might want to limit any big influx of people, that were
  528. explained quite convincingly to me in mail from Michael Deignan and
  529. from Douglas Reeves.  It's unfortunate that one individual, whoever he
  530. was, made the anti-no-code remarks to us.

  532. To the good folks at CALTECH and JPLARC, I say I'm really sorry that
  533. my comments caused you some public embarrassment.  You don't deserve
  534. that at all and I apologize for it.

  595. That's not what I said.  The frequency coordinator must serve both the trustees
  596. of open and closed repeaters, as well as balancing this with the needs of those
  597. who want to put on new repeaters.  If the frequency is already occupied, it 
  598. makes absolutely no difference whether the system is open or closed.  This 
  599. frequency is occupied.  Period.  A coordinator can't let himself judge who is
  600. "more worthy" of a frequency.  An attitude like this is guaranteed to get him
  601. sued.

  608. I know some of the guys who started SCRRBA.  I don't think there's any secret
  609. conspiracy here.  They did what was needed at the time.  Times change and they
  610. may have to change, but they can't be expected to throw people off channels 
  611. they've occupied for 20 years or more.  Change must be reasonable.

  617. no worst in California than in other densely populated areas of the country.

  620. repeaters" from the database.  It doesn't happen overnight.
